# How much have I spent at Costco this year? And is Executive worth it for you

> Ask an AI agent connected to your banks: "How much have I spent at Costco in the last 12 months? Split warehouse, Costco.com and Costco gas." It totals every Costco charge on every connected card. The Executive upgrade costs $65 more a year and pays about 2% back, so it breaks even at roughly $3,250 a year of qualifying purchases.

## Ask it

A household's Costco money rarely sits on one card. The warehouse run goes on one, gas on another, an online order on whatever was saved. An AI agent with read-only access to all your accounts can add it up in one pass. With BankBridge connected to Claude, ChatGPT or another MCP client:

> How much have I spent at Costco in the last 12 months? Split it into warehouse, Costco.com, Costco gas and the membership fee, with the number of charges in each.

[Ask in Claude](https://claude.ai/new?q=How%20much%20have%20I%20spent%20at%20Costco%20in%20the%20last%2012%20months%3F%20Split%20it%20into%20warehouse%2C%20Costco.com%2C%20Costco%20gas%20and%20the%20membership%20fee%2C%20with%20the%20number%20of%20charges%20in%20each.) · [Ask in ChatGPT](https://chatgpt.com/?q=How%20much%20have%20I%20spent%20at%20Costco%20in%20the%20last%2012%20months%3F%20Split%20it%20into%20warehouse%2C%20Costco.com%2C%20Costco%20gas%20and%20the%20membership%20fee%2C%20with%20the%20number%20of%20charges%20in%20each.) (with BankBridge connected)

The agent calls `get_merchant_history` with "costco". It matches any charge with Costco in the merchant name or description, on every connected account, and returns the total, count and each charge. The split comes from the descriptions and categories: station fill-ups usually carry the fuel category, which is the cleanest way to separate them. For a calendar year, say "since January 1" or "in 2025".

## Why the split matters

One Costco number answers "how much went to Costco". It doesn't answer the questions people usually have behind it:

- **Groceries.** A warehouse receipt mixes food with household goods, and the whole charge gets one category. If Costco is your main grocery store, your food spending looks low unless you count it. See [how much you spend on food a month](https://bankbridge.money/guides/how-much-do-i-spend-on-food-a-month).
- **Fuel.** Costco gas belongs with your other fill-ups. See [how much you spend on gas a month](https://bankbridge.money/guides/how-much-do-i-spend-on-gas-a-month).
- **The membership.** Gas is excluded from the Executive reward, so a total that includes it overstates what the upgrade pays back.

## Is Executive worth it for you?

Per Costco's [Executive rewards page](https://www.costco.com/f/-/executive-rewards) (read October 24, 2026): Executive renews at $130 a year, which is $65 more than Gold Star or Business. It pays an annual reward of about 2% of qualifying pre-tax purchases, less refunds, capped at $1,250 in any 12-month period. The upgrade alone pays for itself when 2% of your qualifying spending reaches $65:

Executive comes with other perks too, but the reward is the part you can check against your own spending. Ask the agent to run it:

> Take my Costco charges from the last 12 months, leave out gas and the membership fee, and estimate the pre-tax amount. What would a 2% reward be, and is it more than $65?

## Turning your bank total into qualifying spend

Your bank sees what you paid. The reward is figured on less than that. Costco's terms exclude gasoline, cigarettes and tobacco products, Costco Shop Cards, postage stamps, cellphones and service plans, food court purchases, membership fees, and other fees, deposits, taxes and shipping. Alcohol and prescriptions are excluded in some states. So, working from the bank total:

1. Take out gas station charges and the membership fee. Both are usually separate charges.
2. Take out sales tax. Your bank only has the receipt total, so the agent can estimate it from your state's rate, which is close enough for a yes-or-no on $65.
3. Excluded items inside a warehouse receipt, like Shop Cards or tobacco, aren't visible to your bank. If you buy them, use Costco's own purchase history for those.
4. Refunds come off. The agent sees them as money coming back from Costco.

If the estimate is far from $3,250 in either direction, the answer is clear. If it's close, the reward amount on your next renewal statement is the exact figure.

## Two cards, one membership

Costco counts purchases made by the Primary and the active Household cardholder. If your partner shops on their own card at their own bank, your total misses their half. Connect both sets of accounts, or run the question on each and add them. Our guide on [merging finances with your partner](https://bankbridge.money/guides/merging-finances-with-your-partner-using-ai) covers looking at two people's banks together.

## Checking it once a year

Costco issues the reward about three months before your renewal date, so the month before that is a good time to look:

> Costco spending by month for the last 12 months, excluding gas. Is it trending up or down, and at this pace will I clear $3,250 of qualifying spend this membership year?

Want to see it before connecting anything? The demo account has a year of a made-up household’s transactions. Add it to your agent from the demo dashboard, then ask: _“Show this household's grocery spending by store for the last 12 months.”_ ([what’s in the demo](https://bankbridge.money/demo))

The demo household doesn't shop at Costco, so try a grocery or store question there. On your own accounts, BankBridge is read-only and fetches live from your bank on every question. It costs $5 a month or $50 a year per connected bank.

## FAQ

### How can I see how much I've spent at Costco this year?

Costco's own receipts cover your membership's purchases, but your bank and card statements show what you paid on every card. Connect them to an AI agent with BankBridge and ask for Costco charges since January 1, split by warehouse, online and gas.

### How much do I need to spend at Costco for Executive to be worth it?

The upgrade from Gold Star costs an additional $65 a year, and the reward is about 2% of qualifying pre-tax purchases, so it pays for itself at about $3,250 a year of qualifying spending, around $271 a month. Gas, tobacco and a few other things don't count.

### Does Costco gas count toward the 2% reward?

No. Costco's Executive terms exclude gasoline, along with tobacco, Costco Shop Cards, postage stamps, cellphones and service plans, food court purchases and membership fees. Take those out before you run the break-even.

### Why is my bank total higher than my qualifying spend?

Your bank sees what you paid, including sales tax and excluded items like gas. The reward is figured on pre-tax purchases less refunds, so the qualifying number is always somewhat lower than the bank total.
