# How much have I spent at Starbucks? The real coffee number from your bank

> Ask an AI agent connected to your banks: "How much have I spent at Starbucks since January 1? Posted charges only, with the visit count and the average." It adds up every Starbucks charge on every connected card. If you pay through the Starbucks app balance, the bank sees your reloads, not each drink.

## Why small charges are hard to total

A $6 charge doesn't register when you see it. Two hundred of them across a debit card, a credit card and the occasional tap with a phone add up to a number most people guess low. Card apps show one account at a time, and scrolling a year of statements for one merchant isn't something anyone does twice.

An AI agent with read-only access to all your accounts can read every charge in one pass. With BankBridge connected to Claude, ChatGPT or another MCP client, the question takes one message.

## Ask it

> How much have I spent at Starbucks since January 1? Posted charges only. Give me the total, the number of visits, the average per visit and the busiest day of the week.

[Ask in Claude](https://claude.ai/new?q=How%20much%20have%20I%20spent%20at%20Starbucks%20since%20January%201%3F%20Posted%20charges%20only.%20Give%20me%20the%20total%2C%20the%20number%20of%20visits%2C%20the%20average%20per%20visit%20and%20the%20busiest%20day%20of%20the%20week.) · [Ask in ChatGPT](https://chatgpt.com/?q=How%20much%20have%20I%20spent%20at%20Starbucks%20since%20January%201%3F%20Posted%20charges%20only.%20Give%20me%20the%20total%2C%20the%20number%20of%20visits%2C%20the%20average%20per%20visit%20and%20the%20busiest%20day%20of%20the%20week.) (with BankBridge connected)

The agent calls `get_merchant_history`with "starbucks", which matches store-numbered descriptions like `STARBUCKS STORE 08812` as well as plain `STARBUCKS`. It returns the count, total, average and first and last dates, plus every matching charge, so the day-of-week pattern comes from the agent reading the dates.

## The demo account's coffee year

From the BankBridge demo account (a made-up household with fictional data), last 12 months, pulled 2026-10-15:

Charges

37, one of them still pending

Total

$249.17

Average charge

$6.73

Typical month

$17.53 to $23.07

Paid with

One Chase credit card

The demo household is a light coffee buyer, about three visits a month. The math scales fast: one $6.73 drink every workday is roughly $1,750 a year. Ask the agent for your own per-visit average and visit count and the yearly figure follows.

Note the pending charge. It was today's coffee, and the tool counts it. That's helpful for "how am I doing this week" and unhelpful when you're matching a statement, which is why the prompt above says posted only.

## Paying with the app changes what the bank sees

If you pay at the register with a card, each visit is its own charge. If you pay from a stored balance in the Starbucks app or a Starbucks card, your bank only sees the top-ups. Two things follow:

- The **total** is still the money you put into Starbucks, which is usually the number you want.
- The **visit count and average** describe reloads, not drinks. Round amounts repeating at regular gaps are the giveaway.

> Which of my Starbucks charges look like balance reloads (round amounts) and which look like individual purchases? Total each group.

For drink-by-drink history, use the Starbucks app. The bank side is where the totals across every card live.

## Starbucks vs all coffee

A search for "coffee" won't find Starbucks, because the word isn't in the description. The category does the job instead. Every transaction carries a detailed category, and coffee shops have their own one inside food and drink, so ask:

> Show my food and drink transactions from the last 6 months that are in the coffee subcategory, grouped by merchant, largest first.

That catches the local cafe and the drive-through on the way to work along with Starbucks. Independent shops sometimes bill under a payment processor's name, so if one is missing, tell the agent what it looks like on your statement.

## Turning it into a habit check

Once you know the number, the useful question is whether it's moving. Ask monthly, or fold it into a bigger review:

> Coffee spending by month for the last 12 months. Flag any month more than 25% above my average.

If you're setting a limit, our guide on [building a budget with Claude](https://bankbridge.money/guides/how-to-build-a-budget-with-claude) uses the same data to set categories from what you actually spend.

Want to see it before connecting anything? The demo account has a year of a made-up household’s transactions. Add it to your agent from the demo dashboard, then ask: _“How much has this household spent at Starbucks in the last 12 months, and what's the average visit?”_ ([what’s in the demo](https://bankbridge.money/demo))

On your own accounts, BankBridge is read-only and fetches live from your bank on every question. It costs $5 a month or $50 a year per connected bank.

## FAQ

### How do I find out how much I've spent at Starbucks this year?

Your card and bank statements have every charge. Connect them to an AI agent with BankBridge and ask for Starbucks charges from January 1 to today. It returns the count, the total, the average charge and each transaction.

### I pay with the Starbucks app. Will the total be right?

The total will be right for money that left your bank, which is what you paid. It will show reloads of the app balance instead of individual drinks, so the visit count and average per drink won't be meaningful. Use the app's own history for per-drink detail.

### Why does the total include a charge from today?

The merchant-history tool includes pending charges. Ask for posted charges only if you want a figure that matches your statement.

### Can I see all my coffee spending, not just Starbucks?

Yes. Each transaction carries a detailed category, and coffee shops have their own. Ask the agent for food and drink transactions in the coffee subcategory, grouped by merchant.
