BankBridge vs Monarch MCP

5 min read
Direct answer: Monarch's official MCP connector, which let Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and Gemini CLI read your Monarch data, has been paused since June 29, 2026 while Monarch works through a data portability question raised by one of its data providers. Monarch says it will email people who were connected when it returns, and suggests CSV exports in the meantime. BankBridge is a separate, working option: it connects your AI to your US bank directly, read-only and live, for $5 a month per bank.

The short version

Monarch is a budgeting app ($14.99 a month or $99.99 a year). It built an MCP connector in beta so AI tools could read your Monarch data, and with permission change it. On its own help page, Monarch says the connector is temporarily paused because one of its data providers asked it to pause while they work through a data portability question, and that it doesn't know yet when it will be back.

BankBridge doesn't need a budgeting app. Your AI reads your bank itself, through a secure sign-in on the bank's own site, and every answer is fetched at the moment you ask. It has no write tools at all. If you already use Monarch, you can keep it for budgeting and use BankBridge for questions in Claude.

Where Monarch is better

  • A full budgeting app. Monarch has budgets, goals, household sharing and its own in-app AI assistant. BankBridge has none of that; the chat is the interface.
  • Everything in one place. One Monarch subscription covers all your accounts. BankBridge charges $5 a month per bank.
  • When it comes back. If you already pay for Monarch, its connector will cost nothing extra once it's restored, and Monarch says existing connections will stay authorized.

Where BankBridge is better

  • It works today. BankBridge is live and in Claude's connector directory. There's nothing to wait for.
  • No app in the middle. Your AI reads the bank directly, so it doesn't depend on a budgeting app's data agreements to keep working.
  • Read-only, always. BankBridge has no write tools, so your AI can look at your accounts but can't change anything.
  • Live answers. Every BankBridge answer is fetched from the bank when you ask, including investment holdings with gain/loss.

Which one to pick

Pick Monarch if you already pay for Monarch, you can wait for the connector to return, and a CSV export covers you until then.

Pick BankBridge if you want your AI to answer from your bank now, read-only and live, without depending on a budgeting app. Not sure your bank works? Check your bank first, or try the demo with made-up data.

FAQ

Is the Monarch MCP working?

Not as of October 8, 2026. Monarch's help page says the connector is temporarily paused (since June 29) while it works through a data portability question raised by one of its data providers.

Will my Monarch MCP connection come back?

Monarch says connections made before June 29 stay authorized and that it will email those users when the connector is available again. It hasn't given a date.

What about the community Monarch MCP servers on GitHub?

Those are unofficial projects built on an unofficial Monarch API, and several setups store your Monarch password or MFA secret in a config file. They aren't made or supported by Monarch.

Can I use Monarch and BankBridge together?

Yes. Keep Monarch for budgeting and use BankBridge when you want Claude or ChatGPT to answer from live bank data. They don't conflict.
