The short answer
Claude can read bank statements you give it. Attach a PDF or a CSV export to a chat and ask anything you would ask a careful bookkeeper: what you spent on groceries, which subscriptions renewed, how much came in from clients. Claude reads the file and answers from it.
What Claude cannot do on its own is sign in to your bank. Every answer comes from the files you upload, so it covers the dates on those files and nothing after. For a one-time question that is fine. For a monthly check-in it means downloading new statements every time.
How to upload a statement and get accurate answers
- Export a CSV if your bank offers one. Most banks let you download transactions as CSV from the account activity page. A CSV has one row per transaction, so Claude does not have to reconstruct a table from a PDF layout. Use the PDF statement when you need the official summary.
- Upload one account at a time. Mixing a checking statement and a credit card statement in one question invites double counting: the card payment shows up as spending in checking and the purchases show up again on the card.
- Ask for the totals first, then check them. Start with a question you can verify:
From this statement, give me the starting balance, ending balance, total deposits and total withdrawals. Then list any transaction you weren't sure how to read.
If those four numbers match the summary printed on the statement, Claude read the file correctly and you can move on to real questions:
Group my spending by category and show the top 5. Which charges look like subscriptions?

When uploading is enough
- You have one question about one month at one bank.
- You already have the statements downloaded, for example for a loan application.
- Your bank or credit union is outside the US. BankBridge connects US institutions only.
- You would rather not connect a bank to anything, and a few minutes of downloading is a fair trade.
In those cases, upload the file. It costs nothing extra and works today.
When a live connection is better
The upload approach gets slow when the question repeats or spans accounts: a monthly spending review, a budget check, a subscription audit across two cards, a year of business expenses. Each of those means finding, downloading and attaching new files, and the answers stop at the last statement date.
A read-only connector removes that step. With BankBridge connected, Claude calls a tool when you ask a question and gets current balances and transactions from your bank at that moment, up to 24 months back. You ask in plain language, the same way you would with a file.
- Open the BankBridge listing in Claude's connector directory and click Connect.
- Sign in to BankBridge with a code sent to your email, pick a plan, and connect your bank on its own sign-in screen.
- Back in Claude, ask: "What did I spend on restaurants last month?"
It is $5 a month per bank. Every account at one bank counts as one connection. BankBridge is read-only, has no tool that can move money, and does not keep a copy of your transactions. Claude Code and other MCP apps are covered in the setup guides.
Claude, taxes and bank statements
Tax season is where most people first try this, usually with a stack of twelve monthly statements. Claude is useful for the sorting work. Ask it for lists you can check, not conclusions:
List every deposit from January through December. Separate client payments from transfers between my own accounts, refunds and anything else that isn't income.
Find charges that might be deductible business expenses: software, equipment, travel, phone and internet. Put each in a table with date, merchant, amount and why it might qualify.
Total my charitable donations for the year and list each one.
With uploads, run these one account and one quarter at a time and add them up yourself. With a connection, Claude can pull the full year across accounts in one question. Either way, Claude is not a tax adviser and does not file anything: take the tables to your accountant or tax software. The longer walkthrough is tax prep with AI and your bank data.
Asking Claude about your spending
The questions people ask most are short:
- "How much did I spend this month, by category?"
- "What subscriptions am I paying for, and did any go up?"
- "Did I spend more than I earned last month?"
- "How much have I spent at Amazon this year, month by month?"
Each works with an uploaded statement for the period it covers, and with a connection for any period. More prompts are in how to ask Claude about your spending, and a full monthly plan is in how to build a budget with Claude.
Does Claude have a built-in bank link?
Not as of October 8, 2026. Anthropic has not announced a feature that links bank accounts to Claude. Press reports in September 2026 described a "Money" tab seen in a test version of the Claude iOS app, but it has not launched. Today, bank data reaches Claude through files you upload or through connectors such as BankBridge.
ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity have each added their own bank linking in 2026, each inside its own app. A connector works across apps: the same BankBridge account answers in claude.ai, Claude Code, Cursor and other MCP apps.
