The data matters more than the model
Ask either assistant “how much did I spend on restaurants last month” without account access and you get the same thing: a request to paste your numbers or upload a statement. The reasoning quality of the model barely matters at that point. What matters is whether it can see current balances and transactions, how far back, and in which apps.
So this comparison is about access paths, not benchmark scores.
How ChatGPT gets your bank data
ChatGPT has a built-in personal finance feature. It launched May 15, 2026 as a preview for Pro subscribers in the US, reached Plus on June 25, 2026, and began rolling out to Free and Go users on October 2, 2026. You link accounts inside ChatGPT, get a spending view, and ask questions in chat.
- No setup beyond linking accounts.
- A visual dashboard as well as chat.
- US only, and only inside ChatGPT.
ChatGPT also supports MCP connectors, so you can add BankBridge there too. Steps are in how to connect ChatGPT to your bank account. The longer list of trade-offs is in 7 limitations of ChatGPT's personal finance feature.
How Claude gets your bank data
Claude has no released built-in bank connection. Anthropic has been testing one, reported as Claude Money, but it has not shipped. What Claude does have is custom connectors over the Model Context Protocol.
With BankBridge, you add one URL as a custom connector in Claude.ai and sign in. The connector then shows up in Claude Desktop, the mobile apps, and Cowork. In Claude Code you install a plugin that adds 19 slash commands for common jobs like /subscriptions and /budget-draft.
- About a minute of setup, plus linking your bank.
- Works on every Claude surface, including Claude Code.
- $5 per month per connected bank on top of your Claude plan.

When ChatGPT fits
- ChatGPT is your main assistant and you live in the US.
- You want a dashboard to glance at, with chat as a bonus.
- You only ask money questions in ChatGPT and nowhere else.
When Claude fits
- Claude is the assistant you use for everything else, and you want money questions in the same place.
- You want repeatable workflows. The Claude Code plugin turns jobs like a subscription audit or a budget draft into one command.
- You need output files: a categorized CSV for your accountant, a yearly summary, or a spreadsheet export.
- You run a business and want bookkeeping help for an LLC from the same tools.
Using both with one bank connection
You do not have to choose once. BankBridge is a standard MCP server. Connect each bank one time, then add the same server to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, or Codex. Billing is per bank, not per assistant, so using it in three apps costs the same as using it in one.
A common split: quick questions on your phone in whichever app is open, and the heavier monthly review or tax prep in Claude Code where the output can be saved to a file.
Connect your first bank, then follow the Claude or ChatGPT setup page.
