The short answer
Pick the assistant your work already happens in, then give it your business bank data. Both ChatGPT and Claude can categorize a month of transactions, flag the ones they can't place, and draft a P&L. Neither can do it from memory. Without a bank feed you are back to downloading statements and uploading files every month.
The access paths differ. ChatGPT's built-in Finances feature is a personal finance product with its own plan list. Claude has no built-in bank link at all. Both accept MCP connectors, which is how BankBridge brings read-only, live business bank data into either one.
What bookkeeping asks of an assistant
For a solo business or a small LLC, the recurring jobs are the same every month:
- Put every business charge and deposit in a category your tax preparer recognizes, such as Schedule C lines.
- Keep transfers out of the totals: credit card payments, owner draws, and moves between your own accounts.
- Total income and expenses into a monthly profit and loss.
- Each quarter, total deposits and deductible spending for estimated taxes.
- At year end, hand your preparer category totals and the transactions behind them.
Each of those starts with a complete, current transaction list. That is the part an assistant can't produce on its own, and it is where ChatGPT and Claude differ most.
ChatGPT and your business bank
OpenAI's Finances in ChatGPT links bank, card, brokerage, and loan accounts inside ChatGPT. OpenAI's help center lists it for Free, Go, Plus and Pro users in the US. ChatGPT Business and Enterprise workspaces are not on that list, and the help center says nothing about business bank accounts. The dashboard is built around personal money: spending by category, bills, subscriptions, net worth, and a credit score.
ChatGPT also supports custom MCP connectors through developer mode, on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu, on the web. On a personal plan you add BankBridge yourself. In a Business or Enterprise workspace, an admin adds the connector for the workspace. Steps are in how to connect ChatGPT to your bank account and the ChatGPT Enterprise setup page.
Claude and your business bank
Claude has no released bank connection. Anthropic has tested one in the iOS app, reported as Claude Money, but it has not launched. Claude reaches bank data through custom connectors.
On Pro and Max you add the BankBridge URL as a custom connector and sign in. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner adds the connector to the organization first, then each member connects. The connector follows you to Claude Desktop, the mobile apps, and Cowork.
Claude Code is where bookkeeping gets fast. The BankBridge plugin adds 19 slash commands, including /tax-prep, /monthly-report, and /spending-by, and Claude Code writes the results to files in your project folder: a categorized CSV, a P&L in Markdown, or a year-end summary for your preparer.

A monthly close in either one
With BankBridge connected, the same prompts work in ChatGPT and Claude. Start with the categorization pass:
Pull last month's transactions from my business checking and business card. Group them by Schedule C line. Treat card payments from checking and transfers to my personal account as transfers, not expenses. List anything you can't place.
Answer the leftovers, then ask for the P&L:
Build a P&L for last month with income, each expense category, and net profit. Compare it with the month before and call out any category that moved more than 20%.
Once a quarter, ask for total business deposits and deductible spending so far this year. The full method is in quarterly estimated taxes from real bank deposits. Card payments are the most common source of inflated expense totals, covered in stop double-counting credit card payments.
Check the totals against your bank statement before anything goes to your preparer. The assistant reads exactly what your bank reports, so the main errors to look for are a transfer it counted as an expense or a personal charge on the business card.
Which to pick
ChatGPT fits when:
- Your team already works in a ChatGPT Business or Enterprise workspace.
- You want quick answers in chat and are happy downloading files from there.
Claude fits when:
- You want the monthly close as a repeatable command with files saved to one folder.
- You already use Claude Code or Cowork for the rest of your work.
You can also use both. Connect each bank once and add the same BankBridge server to each assistant; billing is per bank, so a second assistant costs nothing extra. The step-by-step workflow for an LLC is in AI bookkeeping for LLC owners.
What neither replaces
A bank feed covers money that has moved. It doesn't send invoices, run payroll, track sales tax, or file your return. If you need those, accounting software earns its fee; see BankBridge vs QuickBooks for where that line falls for a solo LLC. Your CPA still files.
Connect your business bank, then follow the Claude or ChatGPT setup page.
